famille endormie

Here is a small edition entitled famille endormie (sleeping family) I designed for Eva Niollet as part of her diploma’s final project. It gathers dreams from her family members and herself that she collected and arranged in a specific order.
The publications are staple-bound and printed black and white on grey paper.

We also produced an additional booklet focused on her father’s life entitled le père endormi (the sleeping father)…

What if booklet binding

May 9, 2011

section binding, and the stripes will go into slits, 15mm from the top.

What if -mockup (dodgy)

May 7, 2011

just to give a rough idea of what it looks like, how to bind it, the size of the stripes, etc

I will probably screenprint the cover (white on black) and change the type setting. The photos will be printed on thick paper, full colour and I will maybe print the stripes on colour paper. I will print another last mockup on monday to check all this, or make a plain one (Ill see).

this time for real – finished FIRST INSIGHT INTO TAROT

May 5, 2011

The introductory booklet, interesting fact it has as many pages as there are major arcanas (22), maybe I should number them using tarot cards rather than numbers!

☝ Flatplan of the booklet

The final piece of the what if project will be a booklet presenting, explaining and concluding on the project. If I have enough time I will also make one similar for the prototype project. I decided on a simple layout with one image/project per page and some sort of stripe or piece of paper with the explanations and process. When opened the format is proportional to paperbacks format (and fits in a A5 -economy).

☝ Flatplan of the stripes

☝ Reflection on the sizes

The mockup I made in order to work out the binding, the number of pages and stripes needed. I think I will try a perfect binding because with the section I have one stripe that doesn’t end in the right place.

☝ Some spreads (will be printed in colour)

☝ What it would look like with the stripes on

Trying things out for the piracy project…

Second one (which I prefer because it somehow mimics the traditional book layout) ☟

☠ PIRACY, where am I?

After wednesday’s meeting, I decided to keep it simple and to take the photos between the shelves of the library, as if I couldn’t take the book out or reproduce it. Check it out ☟

the photos I chose☟

These are the raw photos, since the book will be printed in two spot colours I will have to modify them (maybe make them duotone).
The two colours are the following (we took orange over mustard) ☟

And regarding the layout design I will put the photos on the spreads and play with the margins (see example ☟)

Tarot outcomes (so far):

research booklet
traditional exploration:
…booklet (reference, inspirations, research, etc)
…the deck (23 cards, box)
minimalist exploration:
…booklet (all research, iterations, etc)

…decks >colour, abstract, symbols, others typographic to be decided

I also (from Paulus’ advice) established a rule —understand a grid— for the back of the cards to relate them as part of the same project. To do that, I took the pattern I made with the cards on the cover ☟

here it is applied ☟

While there is still a working colour printer at uni I printed the different booklet I will have to print for my assesment anyways.

△ the tarot booklet (I also screenprinted the covers and had time to screw up the binding)

△ And the ET iteration booklet, that I have to bind and trim
