Tarot Crit Ⅰ

January 24, 2011

For the first ‘real’ crit on the tarot project I decided to give myself a couple of exercises in relation to how to express, by minimal means, the meaning of the tarot cards.

each post-it is my answer to one constraint. For example the green one is: rename the card with one adjective and one noun. ⇧Here, I called the hierophant the transcendent guide. (☟) all the names I gave.

The pink note is one sentence that describes the card, but I am not really satisfied with the results so far. On the orange one there is one sign that could stand for the card, but this one is a bit going a step ahead and also really hard because it has been done already in the transparent tarot ( ☟ ).

Finally, on the yellow note, a colour which symbolizes the best the idea enclosed in the card (☟).

I also tried to find a freemasonic symbol for each card but still I didn’t find enough that match perfectly.

But to begin with I wanted to give the people in the crit an overview of the tarot world (that sounds really cheesy) so I compiled a summary of the different themed tarot decks I came across (☟).

(check the gummy bear tarot)

Plus, I enriched the previous research with some more decks (☟).

It has been a bit hard to present (without counting the fact that I was stopped every 30 secs to be asked something). But on the other hand it is good because now I know that I have to prepare a really clear and precise introduction to the topic. I explained my process etc, but Annegrete was mostly concerned about the reasons to do this project, for instance who is for, what is it for?  She also advised me to anaylse the system already existing. I told her that the only that was here was that the cards kept their meaning, the format can change, they don’t have to be numbered or named, there is only one rule that is to keep the same archetypes or ideas. As Andrea told me last week I have to understand the system of symbols that is underlying, and then my job will be to communicate it and finally make up my own major arcana deck.

For the time being what I am going to work on is a sort of explanatory booklet (this is the system analysis + the meaning of each card and the symbols associated to them). Ideally I would have done that by next monday. Then I am going to go on with my exercises/experimentations and make them as proper cards (to put them into context). So I will go to screenprinting to make my own colours and print the colour cards. I will do the same with the names and all the post its I have already made. The purpose of this is to create a toolbox that I can use when the time will be to create my deck.

The second step, will be to create my own system for my cards. For example, do I put the names, the numbers, how do the cards relate to each other, how are they different, do I have characters? How to put my own point of view and how do I add a new dimension? Who do I design it for? Why do I design it for?

Hopefully the first step will be accomplished by monday and I will be able to answer the questions from the second step.

January 16, 2011

So, here’s my weekend so far (can’t believe I only got back to London last week).

Finished as much as I could for Edgware road, I am now waiting for the format guidelines.

Started the jacket for Caandides’ vinyl that should be out by next month. I don’t want to put images now because I don’t want to unveil it too much, so I will put some of the things we tried but didn’t choose when I will post the finished visuals. What I can say so far though, is that there are two songs on it, one on face A and the other on face B (quite logical so far), and what we want to do is to design the jacket as if each face was independent. We decided this because face B is a remix, so we are trying to imply that the songs are not really part of the same thing. This also gives us the chance to explore each song independenty and to focus on conveying each one the best way. In the meantime .

>>>and I forgot to say I am going to France on the 2nd feb to vj for Caandides for a big gig at the beaux arts de Caen. I am going to be paid and they refund us travel expenses and give us somewhere to stay overnight!

What I still have to do today is continue doodling for the critical prototypes and possibly go beyond these ▽, so that tomorrow I can get cracking at school.

Also, for the print matters I wanted my object to be a penguin, or the representation of a penguin (easier). So I will have a look at the 19th century study engravings such as those you can find in this book.

And finally, something that won’t take long to do, I have to gather my new research on tarot before I see Andrea Lioy tomorrow.

I think that’s it, I have roughly said everything that I wanted to say.

Last day of term! Already!

What is ahead?

First Sadhna’s briefing, today at 1.30 for the critical prototypes brief! I am going to work with the book, it is relevant regarding my previous projects, but also I have been wanted to work on that for a long time. I know that when I read it is most of the time not sitting in front of a table but rather in weird positions. This will be the starting point.

Second, Romain & I have finally put up this is worth sharing yesterday. I will post the link here once everything is polished. By the way, if by any chance you have a photo to send the email adress is:

Then I might sneak in Phil Baines’ group to go to the exhibition they are going to. It will depend on how long it takes to finish T.I.W.S.

I am going back to Paris on sunday. I have to do a lot of work for Caandides gig next friday, but it will be fine. Sagmeister is giving a free talk in centre Pompidou next thursday so I should go there as well.

Over these holidays I will have to work on the prototypes, my self initated briefs, more caandides and finishing the what if (maybe?). And Edgware road of course!

back from Spain ✈

November 28, 2010

I have two weeks to do all I want to do before christmas break.

I have been to Galicia, in Spain, to attend the debut 2010 show. During my trip I have seen LOTS OF very cool things, nice old cities, churches and a crazy bridge and created innovative dance moves. I also bought this book

it has amazing engraving of animals such as the followings

Now that I am back in London I will do: first, no more context and second, a lot of screenprinting. I will also make christmas chocolates to offer then (but I keep secret my magic recipe). Basically, over the next 2 weeks I will make more poster/imposition/signature/booklets, 2 days of internship with Sabine, finish the what if project and at least 2 Caandides animations.

Enough talking for now, time to make!

November 15, 2010

Today’s ☑ list is nearly ☑!

My reading copy is nearly finished, I just need to spell check it, and read it again to make sure it makes sense.

I have been to falkiners to buy different papers to try for my cards.

I don’t know yet how thick I want them to be and if I print black and white or colour (or one colour?).

I also talked to Paul to clarify some points and booked the hostel in Porto.

Tonight I will finish my bibliography, and the cards first draft. Also read the reading copy and maybe have it read by somebody to check the spelling.

Tomorrow morning I will start the modes of design thing and have my tutorial with Paulus (for which I will have filled the form). I should also have a chat with Romain about this worth sharing.

Now the problems I need to adress are:
What is on the cards? everything? just the evidence?
How do I present them? in a box? wrapped into the bibliography or conclusion or introduction?
What is my title?
Where do I put my research report if it is not on the cards?

November 10, 2010

Now that I am back from France (and, until I go to Spain), I can focus and finally do all the things I have to do!

Firstly, What If
I have been to the crit yesterday with nothing more than last time really. I will just write down the comments and suggestions I got, and go back to this project later (after context I guess).
† use ring binding, like huge rings
for example
† look for the biggest book ever -apparently it is the Wikipedia book with all the articles
† find extreme positions
† think about the book scale that is human

† think through the words I am using, like do I want to say binding
† if the e-books take over, printed books will be limited artefacts
† an installation might be a solution, for example a printer that prints forever on endless paper
† what is the most edited book?
† what is the positive side of finite objects, do humans understand infinity (like hyperlinks)
† leave the outcome open, what I am more interested in? What my comment would be?

Then context (I have seen my tutor yesterday),
When I saw my tutor a month ago, one of the first questions I asked if I didn’t have too many quotations. He replied: oh no, it’s good. And yesterday, the first thing he said to me was that I have too many quotations (although I reduced the amount myself since october). I now have to reformulate everything, he said, in order to not look like I am lacking ideas. Otherwise the rest is fine, the others comments were about putting the images next to where I refer to them in the text, and again, bigger titles and modify some of them.
I also talked about the visual piece, I am going to make cards, the dissertation will be split on the fronts, and the 3rd mind map I made a month ago, split at the backs. This mind map takes the values from oral and literate cultures I defined and relate them to media, the point is to show how these values are distrbuted. et voilà!

October 31, 2010

Today, I will work on my context conclusion and do more What if shit.

What I have done yesterday, on What if,  raised a couple of problems I need to resolve, such as the content or the message of the object, its form and its aesthetics. An expending binding or stucture is not enough, because I also want to be able to edit the content, not only add to it. I came up with a couple of ideas that are not really working yet! I am now questionning the actual value of the question I chose (what if printed matter were never finite?). I think I have to establish some constraints from the definition of a printed matter otherwise my project is just going to end up being a ring binder. Today will be focused on adressing the higlighted bits.

For the content, I have been looking into lists of things that always add up and change. The most interesting I came up with is the list of all the Internet URL that exist. The only problem is that I can’t find this info, I am sure (or I hope) it is somewhere though. I might just make something up for the moment, or restrict it to a country or to .com for example.

What if a printed matter was never finite?

October 30, 2010

This will be the question I wil explore. I chose this one, because it deals with the definition a a printed matter, and its core characteristics.

I think the idea is to find a system that allows to be able to add to a printed matter, as much as we want, and easily. One way could be the binding, I will see Douglas on monday and we will find something!

>>> I forgot! what about the content? is it blank?

October 18, 2010

What am I involved in, so far on this 21st october?

Obviously context dissertation, my plan is to have it read tonight by my (english) flatmate.
Tomorrow, placement with Sabine (at Sabina – website coming soon) + meeting with Marcos to come to a design for the invitations for the ESDGEMA show, which is a collaboration with spanish fashion sudents.
This weekend, I have to design (at least start) a flyer for Caandides‘ concert in december, which will actually be for the whole festival and hopefully have a chat with Romain about ‘this is worth sharing’ (coming soon too).
I will also photocopy an article for the PrintMatters Public Library (coming very soon this one), I think I will take Lev Manovich’s Database as a symbolic form (which was recommended by Rebecca Ross), it is very smart and I enjoyed reading it a lot.

And this is it.

What I have finished so far?

The first PrintMatters booklet (which I will re-make properly with the good impressions).
The collaborative piece with Humbelina (see above, spanish collaboration, and below photo).
I started to screenprint a vector mask that I made for Caandides, but I am not satisfied with at all!

Oh! I forgot the most important: the communication for next wednesday’ talk, with Gabriel and Romain!

And this it too.
