final version of the ‘classical’ exploration

some updates – tarot

May 1, 2011

I will print 5 different decks for the tarot project: the allegories, another tarot of colour, the most recurrent symbols, the abstract one and the hybrids/engravings.

Below are some experiments for the most recurrent symbols. I still have to choose if I put the same number of symbols on all the cards or not.

I am also thinking about mixing up the ‘minimal’ decks such as below with the most recurrent symbols merged with the another tarot of colour. These experiments won’t be printed as cards (so far it’s not in my plans).

Finally, I am near completion of the hybrid/engraving deck —I need a title for this one. Below a summary of my research and a screenshot of the booklet (in progress) that will come with the deck.

What’s left to do is basically finishing the layout for the allegories and the most recurrent decks, design the title card and the back and finish the engraving/hybrids illustrations. I am hoping to have them done by tuesday afternoon so that I can send them to the printer before the weekend.

Over the past few days I have been working on finishing the first draft of the tarot/engraving/hybrid set (see above, there still are 3 missing). I also scaled them down to make sure the illustrations stay fine ☟

The plan for this is to finish the main illustrations, get in touch with tarot people to get feedback and eventually make them look like proper cards (do I put the number of the arcana, its name, is there a frame, is there colour, etc?)

I talked to Andrea as well. He gave me useful references and pointed two or three mistakes in the tarot booklet. The good news is that there is no hybrid animal tarot existing yet, but there are collage tarot that have been made (for example☟)

† The Tranformational tarot

Also, I learned that there is a tarot of the colours already existing (but it seems a bit random), and I found out a couple of abstract decks: here and there.

Today I did good work on the classical exploration of tarot. I am working with engravings and my hands to give me more constraints. The rules I gave myself are two animals for one archetype and I chose them regarding their symbolism and not depending on if they are already on the cards. Below are the latest ones, the one posted before were the first sketches.

And, I made the cards (or experiments of making them).

I am working on a new deck, that probably falls into the traditional category, I am maing hybrid animals with 19th engravings. I chose 22 different animals that I combine together to make the ‘archetypes’ of the cards. This allows me to relate some cardsby using different parts of the same animal.

From the worst to the best (to me), I choose to use only 7 colours  to  separate the elements, and eventually connect them through the deck. I guess this system will evolve when I will make more illustrations.
